A Record Low Snow Year in Colorado
Colorado’s snowpack is at record low levels this winter. According to the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), statewide snowpack is currently sitting at just 55% of normal — and in some basins, like the Arkansas River basin, it’s as low as 48%.
Key Statistics:
• Statewide snowpack: ~55-62% of median
• Some basins recording lowest levels on record
• Warm, dry conditions persist
• Precipitation near normal, but not translating to snow
What This Means for Elk & Deer:
With less snow pushing animals to lower elevations, elk and mule deer may stay in higher country longer than usual. Hunters should focus on traditional feeding areas rather than expecting the typical winter migration.
