What Are Your Chances? Understanding Colorado Draw Odds

One of the most common questions we get from hunters is simple: What are my odds? Colorado draw system is complex, and understanding the odds can help you make smarter application decisions.

Elk Draw Odds by Unit

Colorado elk tags vary widely in difficulty:

  • Over-the-counter (OTC) tags: Some units in western Colorado offer OTC elk tags — no draw needed. These are great for hunters who just want to hunt without going through the draw process.
  • Premium draw units: Units like 2, 4, and 7 have extremely low draw odds for non-residents (often less than 1%). These units consistently produce some of the biggest bulls in the state.
  • Moderate units: Units like 12, 13, 441, and 211 offer much better odds (15-30%) while still producing quality bulls. These are hidden gems that serious hunters should consider.
  • Second draw opportunities: Leftover tags after the first draw can have dramatically better odds.

Mule Deer Draw Odds

Mule deer are generally harder to draw than elk:

  • Premier units: Units 10, 17, 27, and 201 have huge applicant pools. Non-resident odds for rifle tags typically range from 3-7%.
  • Hidden gems: Some lesser-known units on the western slope offer 20%+ draw odds with decent buck opportunity.
  • Archery odds: Mule deer archery tags often have better draw rates than rifle tags.

Factors That Affect Your Odds

1. Residency: Residents always have a separate pool of tags. Non-residents typically compete for 10-20% of available tags.

2. Weapon type: Muzzleloader and archery tags are often easier to draw than rifle tags in the same unit.

3. Preference points: Points build each year you apply but do not draw — max out at 5 points for most species. Even 1-2 points can significantly improve your odds in moderate units.

Our Recommendation

Do not just chase the hardest tags. The learning curve of hunting an unfamiliar unit can cost you precious hunting days. Some of the best hunting opportunities are in units with moderate draw odds where fewer hunters compete.
